10 Essential Tips for Beginners

Updated: Jan 18, 2021

1.

Conserve Energy! Don’t burn out too fast. You don’t want to be gassed then see the clock still has 4 minutes left.

2.

Find one submission you really like, and practice it relentlessly.

3.

Never compare yourself to anyone else. Compare yourself to how you were yesterday. “Everyday I’m 1% better than I was yesterday”.

4.

Focus on fundamentals.

5.

Consistency is key 🔑

6.

Try not to watch too many YouTube techniques. It may confuse you. Instead, watch matches from high level black belts and try and emulate them.

7.

Find a black belt that you really like style wise and try and copy their game.

8.

Don’t eat before class (at least 3 hours), you don’t want to throw up on your training partner.

9.

Leave your ego at the door. Tap early. Tap often. Every time you tap is an opportunity to learn.

10.

Enjoy the ride!!! It’s a fun journey and you won’t be a white belt forever!
